Useful Information on Diabetes

The following are known to increase your risk of developing Type 2 diabetes:

   ● being older than 45 yrs
   ● being overweight
   ● a family history of diabetes (parent, brother, or sister)
   ● a family background is Native Alaskan, American Indian,
      African American, Hispanic/Latino, Asian American, or Pacific
      Islander
   ● a history of gestational diabetes or having had at least one baby
      weighing more than 9 lbs.
   ● a history of high blood pressure
   ● a history of high cholesterol and/or triglycerides
   ● inactivity/ lack of regular exercise
   ● a history of polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS)
   ● poor dietary habits

Obviously you cannot change certain risks such as age, family history and genetics. Fortunately, you CAN change dietary habits, exercise level and weight, which are the BIGGEST risk factors.

The following are signs and symptoms of diabetes:

   ● frequent urination
   ● extreme thirst
   ● unexplained weight loss
   ● extreme hunger
   ● Weakness and fatigue
   ● tingling and numbness in hands,legs, and feet
   ● dry, itchy skin
   ● frequent infections
   ● wound that take a long time to heal
   ● dark, velvety patches of skin around the neck, armpits, groin

Signs indicating possible high insulin levels:

   ● weight gain, especially around the waist (apple shape vs. pear
      shape)
   ● increased blood pressure, diastolic and systolic
   ● increasing total cholesterol levels
   ● gout
   ● PCOS
   ● Dark, velvety patches of skin around the neck, armpits, groin
